You can't really approach modern sci-fi or cyberpunk without running into Gibson's influence. Neuromancer was ground breaking. Gibson is up there with Stephenson for crafting rich storylines. (Some would say, and I agree, that later Stephenson eclipses Gibson.) His Sprawl Trilogy may be a little too cyberpunk for some people's tastes, but his last two books are much more accessable. Pattern Recognition is set in the current time and is simply amazing. It very well may be his best work, though it's hard to look past the towering presence of Neuromancer sometimes. His latest book, Spook Country, is a follow up of sorts to Pattern Recognition, but goes into other territory. His blend of the Voodoo loa gods with modern technology is particularly creative, and even though he visisted this idea in one of his earlier works (which in turn influenced the Shadowrun universe for any old-school table-top RPGers out there) it's a compelling mix of the anthropological folk vibe with a techno-thriller.
