Obesity is actually quite the problem, especially if we ever plan to nationalize healthcare. I can't see how it can be justified to help people who can't help themselves.

The rest of the western world somehow copes with our public health systems not discriminating by weight; even with the US's much-higher obesity rate I really can't see it as being a make-or-break factor.

As for "nationalizing" health care, that's far from the only option. Two-tier systems can work quite well, particularly if you give higher income individuals incentive to take out private coverage instead of relying on the public. Here that's handled by a 1% additional surcharge if you're earning above a certain threshold and don't have private insurance. It's not a perfect system, but to me it's a better solution than denying health care to those whose lifestyle one disagrees with.
