PSA: Don't check Facebook while robbing someone's house

Who says social networking is worthless? Facebook has now proven instrumental in identifying the culprit in a burglary in which two diamond rings were stolen from one Pennsylvania woman's home. How did Facebook get into the mix? Because the thief decided to take a break during his break-in and figured he'd check his Facebook account using the computer in the victim's house.

That's stupid enough, but then the crook didn't even bother to log out of the site before leaving the house. The victim immediately put it all together (really, how could you not?), and police were able to use the identity of the alleged perpetrator -- one Jonathan G. Parker -- to track him down in short order.

The rest of the investigation is relatively straightforward: Cops found Parker through a friend, discovered an acquaintance whom Parker had asked to be part of the burglary, and ultimately tracked down Parker himself. He's now in custody on $10,000 bail and facing up to 10 years in prison if he's convicted for the crime.

Social networks continue to be a major part of legal news of late. Australia is using Facebook and MySpace to send legal subpoenas. And crooks now regularly case Twitter in order to figure out when potential victims are going to be away from their homes.

Is there no part of society that's safe from the long arm of the law... and the longer arm of the criminal?

A 65-year-old man who opposes Barack Obama's plans for healthcare reform had one of his fingers bitten off during a pro-reform rally organised by the liberal political action group MoveOn.org.

After 100 protesters supporting a healthcare overhaul assembled for a vigil in Thousands Oaks, California yesterday, a group of people who opposed reform showed up.

A confrontation ensued between a man who supported healthcare reform and one of the members of the anti-reform group, police said.

The two men yelled at each other and then got into a fist fight. As the brawl escalated, the pro-reform protester bit a finger off of the 65-year-old.

The injured man walked to a nearby hospital where his finger was reattatched. A hospital spokeswoman said the man had Medicare, the US government-run insurance programme for older citizens.

A MoveOn spokeswoman expressed regret for the incident and said the organisation "condemns violence in all forms," according to Politico.

She said: "While we don't know if either party involved was a MoveOn member, we regret any violence that may have occurred yesterday, and we support the Ventura county sheriff's investigation into the situation."

Desperate times for desperate folks, I suppose.

If only he had health care, then he could probably get that wound looked at.

Caught this in the paper the other day. The stupidity level....just wow. It would make a good facebook promotion though. People love that shit so much they rock it out mid-robbery.
